The Open Faculty Patchbook & Ontario Extend: A Unique Online Professional Learning Opportunity Awaits!
  1. The Open Faculty Patchbook is a community ‘patchwork’ of teaching skills and experiences. Each ‘patch’ has been written by a professor or staff member in higher education and is focused on one particular pedagogical skill. Together, these patches create a how-to-teach manual for higher education that is openly licensed and available to anyone. Each patch covers one pedagogical skill. The scope is dictated by those who want to contribute their story. Those who author a chapter offer their take on it. In this session, we will showcase the work already done, and solicit the help of the participants in creating the next iterations of The Patchbook. Including the in progress Open Learner Patchbook. This whole idea has been inspired by an amazing project by Robin De Rosa: The Open Anthology of Earlier American Literature and the benefits of open educational practices.
  2. A project of eCampusOntario, Ontario Extend is a professional learning opportunity that can be used by educators as a springboard to enhance their teaching with technology. The empowered educator framework has us extending our skills as teachers of course, but also as technologists, curators, collaborators, experimenters, and scholars. Join this session to get a sense of what’s involved and decide whether you want to pursue the Empowered Educator badge that awaits you at the finish line.

Extended Reality: The New Experiential Learning
Some predict that we are transitioning from the information age to the experiential age with Extended Reality (XR), a term that encompasses virtual, augmented and mixed/merged reality. These nascent technologies are poised to teleport students from the classroom to new, immersive and interactive worlds. The question on the minds of most educators is whether these experiences will be novel or truly transformative. You’ll have to judge for yourself. In this session, we will discuss how XR, primarily virtual reality (VR), is likely to affect the learning landscape in terms of simulation-based learning, teaching empathy and social VR for synchronized online learning.

Introduction to Screencasting with Screencast-o-matic
Has this ever happened to you?
  • students missed your important introduction to the course
  • students asking you to explain the assignment again (and again)
  • students want an explanation of concepts taken up in class
Would you like to be able to record an explanation of your syllabus, a walk-through of your assignment, or a narration of your slides? Learn how to create screencasts in this workshop. Screencasting allows you to record a video of your screen while providing narration. You can show your students your Blackboard shell, demonstrate software, narrate slides, etc. Screencasting can also be used by students as an alternative way to show learning (e.g. instead of handing in slides, they can submit narrated slides).

* Participants are asked to bring their own computer.

The Art of Serious Game Design
Limited Capacity seats available

Have you ever wanted to create a game for your classroom and didn’t know where to start? Join us and you’ll see how easy and quick it is to create an educational game in one hour.

This session is split into two parts. To complete Level 1, you will engage with an interactive online game to learn about the different gaming frameworks and how they align with each other. It will take roughly 20 minutes to complete and it is highly recommended to complete this before joining us for Level 2 at the event. You will receive access to the game module after registering for this session. Upon successful completion of Level 1 you will be presented with the ability to claim the Game Design Hero Level 1 digital badge!

Level 2 will be a 1-1.5 hour face to face session on June 12. We will work together in small groups and follow The Art of Serious Game Design methodology developed by a team from Ryerson University, George Brown College and Centennial College. The face to face session invites participants to:
  • Brainstorm ideas for a game with a group using prompts.
  • Create a paper prototype of a game for your learners.
  • Identify next steps to develop your game
Upon successful completion of Level 2 you will be presented with the ability to claim the Game Design Hero Level 2 digital badge and will have earned the official title of Game Design Hero!
